Five times a day the cries of "Allaaah
who arkbaar," float across the city from the towers of the mosques.
The phrase which means "God is the only god and Mohammad is his prophet,"
causes faithful Muslims to kneel on the calloused spots along their knees,
feet and hands in order to pray to Allah. The major religion of Bagdhad
is Islam. This religion is devided into two fractions, the Shiites and the
Sunnie majority. This split has resulted because of a disagreement on whether
Mohammad's decendents should roule or wheter the learders should be chosen
by the people. The Sunnie majority has the most control in Baghdad and are
in the most positions in the government. Muslims follow the "five pillars
of Islam" which includes fasting, a holy journey, donations to the
poor, and daily prayer five time a day.
