The Eurphrates and Tigris rivers provide a tremendous resourse for the city of Baghdad. These life giving waters support the canals that irrigate the fields of Baghdad. Fish from the rivers form a supple of the people of Baghdad. The rivers are seperated by miles of plain but later combine to form the Shatt al-Arab. (pg. 11, Irag..in Pictures) Many people live on the rivers and the lakes formed by the Tigris. Called Marsh Arabs these people ply the rivers in boats and build their houses out of reeds.

Waterwheels form a vital part of the irrigational canals that make it possible to grow crops in the dry ground. The waterwheels take water from the Euphrates and Tigris river to the canals.
