The staple food of Indian society is grain. Wheat, rice, pulses and millet make up nearly every meal in one form or another. Pulses, (seeds from pod vegetables) can be ground down and cooked into a thick porridge called dal. Samosas are thin, flaky pastries filled with meat, potatoes, and vegetables. Meat, fish, and eggs are often 'curried' or cooked in a spicy curry sauce. Religion often effects the eating habits of Indians. Observant Hindus do not eat beef, and Muslims do not eat pork. Vegetables are curried as a meat alternative.

Indian food is more often then not very spicy, so meals are usually served with a variety of chutneys to cool the pallet. Tea, and raita ( a cool yogurt drink) are served with nearly every meal. India is a huge consumer of tea. It seems to be the country's beverage of choice. (2)
