Qing Dynasty

Past - Present - Connection

Sections of the Great Wall of China, including this section near Beijing, have been restored in the 20th century. Built by the Ming dynasty in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Great Wall stretches about 2400 km (about 1500 mi) along China's northern border. Shihuangdi, the first emperor of China (221-210 BC), constructed different fortifications also known as the Great Wall. Few traces remain of that ancient structure.

After the fall of the Ming in the early 17th century, the Qing dynasty brought China into a whole new era. The time between 1636 and 1912 was a period of economic flourish and cultural development, including artistic and academic prosperity. The people lived under the careful dictatorship of emperors who strove to keep peace within the country's borders by establishing ethnical equality. Trade with other nations, including Europeans, gave the Qing Chinese financial strength. The Chinese were proud of their society, and fought to keep out foreign influence. Today the society is much changed, but we can still see connections between the Qing dynasty and the present.
