The Ottoman civilization was based upon war. They started as a small country and eventually conquered the greater part of the Mediterranean area. The Ottoman Empire worked diligently with their military to cut into neighboring countries who's week armies were no match for the rath of the Ottoman Turks. Ironically, hovever, this would be the same way they met their downfall. (Source 2)
The Ottoman's history reeks with the smell of war, from massacres (e.g. The Massacre of Janissaries) to ones involving the World (e.g. World War I). The Ottoman Empire was even titled "The Successors to Rome" due to their geographical position in the middle east and their bloody past. They reigned from 1350-1918 in which they fought and won many wars:

 1792   Treaty of Jassy
 1798-1799   Napoleon attempts to conquer Egypt.
 1804   First Serbian Uprising.
 1815   Second Serbian Uprising.
 1822-1830   Greek War of Independence
 1826   Massacre of Janissaries; Ottoman fleet is sunk at Navarino
 1829   Treaty of Adrinople.
 1853-1856   The Crimean War
 1878   Congress of Berlin: Serbia and Montenegro are granted independence. Bulgaria is granted broad autonomy.
 1912-1913   The First Balkan War
 1243   Turkish nomads settle in Asia Minor
 1389    Ottomans defeat Serbs at Kosovo
 1402   Tamerlane defeats Ottomans at Ankara
 1453   The Ottomans conquer Constantinople. This marks a large change in the power the Ottomans possessed. Before this victory the Ottoman Turks where viewed by the Eastern powers as a gnat not even worth swatting. However, with their capture of Constantinople (now named Istanbul) they were finally recognized as a world power.
 1517   Ottoman Turks' military defeats the Mameluke forces in Palestine.
 1526   Battle of Mohacs
 1529   First Siege of Vienna
 1571   The Battle of Lepanto
 1683   Second siege of Vienna (This is one of the most important wars for the outcome would effect the rest of Europe through trade, treaty and furture war.)
 1774   Treaty of Kucuk Kaynarca

 1913   The Second Balkan War
 1914   The Ottoman Empire enters World War I as one of the Central Powers, joining Germany to fight the Allied Powers.
 1915   The Armenian Massacre
 1919-1924   End of the Ottoman Empire
