For almost all Indians family life is the most important social unit. Almost every one is expected to get married and divorce is very rare. Marriages are usually aranged but "love marriages" are becoming more common. Within families there is a clear order of gender, age and the number of male children. The eldest male is looked upon as the head of the household. Males have a higher status than females in the family. boys are more admired and better taken care of than the girls.

Another issue is the caste system. For hundreds of years now there has been a catse system The people were didvided into four catses.

Brahmin: This caste is the highest caste. It is composed of priests. They were looked upon as the holyest class.

Kshatriyas: This caste is made up of the nobility and the soilders. The rulers of India were born into thses castes.

Vaishya: This caste is made up of the commoners. The majority of the people belong to this caste.

Untouchables( Shudras): This caste is made up of the poorest people of India. During the Indian revolution, it was these people that Gandhi fought for.

After India gained independance another issue came into play. The old grudge that the Muslims and Hindus had towards eachother caused fighting to break out. Because of this the country split in two. One part of India became Pakistan(Muslim) and the other remained India(Hindu). Till this day these two countries are always threatening eachother and fighting.
