After you read the assigned section, you need to answer the following questions for that section in note form. Be prepared to do some journal writing in class on a variation of the questions and/or discuss the issues raised in your answers and/or take a reading quiz. You also need to come up with one significant question of your own and answer it.
Section 1 (455-458)
1. In what ways did Elizabeth I pursue policies of moderation?
How was her ruling style different from Philip II's rule?
Section 2
1. People accused of witchcraft were usually poor, female, single
or widowed, and over fifty. What might be reasons why accused
witches fit this profile?
2. What were the political and religious issues at the core of the English Revolution?
Section 3 (Only read sections that apply to these questions)
1. Why is the reign of Louis XIV considered the best example of
absolute monarchy?
2. Discuss the measures taken by Peter the Great to westernize Russia. What were the effects of these measures on his subjects?
3. Why did England move toward a limited monarchy rather than absolutism found almost everywhere else in Europe?
Section 4

different from those of John Locke? Which philosophy do you agree

Making Connections
15.1-15.2
15.3-15.4
Because we will move through this chapter fairly quickly, we will have a shortened version of a test (aka a QUEST). Two of these questions will show up and you will choose to answer one. (50 Points)
1. Why is Elizabeth I of England regarded as a more effective ruler than Phillip II of Spain? What does this say about what makes a successful ruler?
2. What factors led to the witchcraft hysteria? Why do you think that poor, single women were so often the targets? What does the hysteria tell you about human nature?
3. Today, it's very easy for us to look down upon a society
that has an absolute monarchy. Is having an absolute monarchy
ever beneficial for a society? Use concrete examples from this
period of history and beyond to prove your argument.
