Values That Drive Your Life: Part I

The following are some questions that will help you to articulate your personal values. They will help you to become aware of the rules that drive your thoughts and actions; to become aware of which rules you would like to drive you; which principles you have the power to choose (remember the concept of given community versus chosen community? These questions will help you to become aware of ways in which you violate your own principles, in either small or large ways. Answer these questions on another sheet of paper and be prepared to discuss you responses. Don't just rush through this assignment- this is about real life-this is about you.

Choices

How do you make your choices? Are you rule driven or outcome driven (e.g. deontological or consequentialist)?

Under what circumstances would you steal?

Under what circumstances would you lie?

Under what circumstances would you break the law?

What is your feeling about the laws of this country in general?

What is your feeling about authority and power? Is it important to you? Would you hurt others in order to attain it? Would you hurt others once you had it?

Do you lead a risky life? In what ways do you consider your behavior or attitudes risky? Why do you like/dislike risk?

Self

What are some of the most harmful things someone could do to you?

Have you ever done something that you deeply regretted? Why do you regret it? Have you done anything about it?

What makes you feel guilty? Is guilt a useful mechanism?

What makes you feel good about yourself?
