Three Gorges Dam: Good or Bad?

By: Grant Zider

The Three Gorges Dam project went underway in 1994 and is estimated to be finished by 2009. It will be the largest dam in the world, but will take a large amount of recources to build. Every day 18,000 Chinese are working on the dam. It is unclear how much the project will cost, but it is estimated between $17 and $100 billion , in which the Chinese government will have to borrow money from supporting countries. This project brings up a large amount of controversey with those who oppose the dam. The dam will have an enormous effect on the environment, flood over 300 villages, and force over one million farmers and villagers off their homeland. However, the Three Gorges Dam is also intended to solve many problems. China is already a poor country, and the dam will reduce pollution and produce an enormous amount of energy for China and hopefully help its economy.
