Those who argue that age should matter when it comes to censoring female entertainer's public attire have realized the difference between the impacts young artists have on America's youth. An older more mature woman has the freedom to do as she pleases with her body and although it might not be socially acceptable, parents can rationalize to their children that these are adults not children or teenagers. Teen pop stars try to gain popularity by transcending into becoming a teen idol; one in which teenagers everywhere either wants to either be like, or be with. An angry 24-year old openly complains on a sound-off Internet page about the way teen pop stars capture their audience by creating a false image.

"The Britney Spears, try to come across as these innocent, fun loving, clean cut, good role models and market themselves for kids to eat up their dolls, posters and whatever else they can make money off of. But at the same time as they do all this, they do things to influence kids that they really just shouldn't be doing."(Sound-off)

By assuming the identity of a teen idol or role model, these stars are creating a character for young kids to look up to. When they dress in inappropriate apparel on public television the same kids that favor their kind personality, will follow their idols lead in hopes that some day they too will receive the attention that they have devoted to their idol.

Adult celebrities; however, do not market themselves towards America's youth. Singing Barbie dolls and accessories aren't made available in children's stores of adult entertainer's and Lil Kim has created a unique identity that is clearly not supposed to be modeled by children. Her sexy clothes and provocative attitude demonstrate that, "she's a big advocate of 'if you got it flaunt it.' What she shows off is all of hers," quotes askmen.com. She has never suggested little kids should follow in her footsteps and the media insures adolescents know Lil Kim's fashion sense is something that only should be worn in the privacy of one's bedroom. An article from Askmen.com states, "her revealing downright nasty dresses however has landed her a spot on everybody's worst (or least) dressed list."

The media coverage on teen idols such as Brittney Spears and Cristina Aguilaira gives a message that acting in an immoral way is either fashionable or trendy. Although these pop stars don't personally fit the teen idol stereotype, most are seen, "as people who do drugs, smoke cigarettes, and consume mass quantities of alcohol." Whether it be drugs or sleazy clothes, the teenagers of today look at these teenage stars and the way they dress and act in order to find a model example on how to be beautiful and popular.

Teen stars have caused much controversy in the world of religion. One young girl took the words of Brittney Spears songs so literally she seduced men on the Internet to "come on over" to her house.
"Once these men had snuck into her room, Martha would perform sex acts with them she had learned from watching a Brittney Spears video." states a Christian newsletter. Denying that a young girl could have come up with such creative ideas by herself the church decided to place the blame elsewhere.

It's not the parent's fault. Its not God's faultLet's lay the blame at the feet of the harlot who caused this whole disgusting situation in the first place. Brittney Spears (Landover Baptist Church)

The youth of today are easily influenced by what's being viewed on television. If little kids see pretty girls in skimpy clothes with tones of guys it is likely that they will want to gain the same attention and might try to act or dress older then their age. On teacher complains "I have third grade girls (who sometimes wear mascara, eye shadow etc. They also want to wear midriff tops to school" on teacher.net. Little girls today are in a hurry to grow up to be just like their favorite singers that all of the guy's worship. Older women are seen in girl's eyes simply as old. Nobody wants to dress like their mom so female's following these dress habits is not an issue. Everyone has the desire to be young and beautiful and if the standards are being set by these pop stars that in order to be beautiful means showing off your size two waist, then trends will be set and many will unfortunately follow.
