- Censorship should be allowed on the radio to save the integrity of our society and its well-being in the future. Too much filth and hate is allowed to be broadcast everyday to anybody who is listening. Americans need to start protecting the kids, and if it is not possible to get harmful radio personalities, such get Howard Stern and Dr. Laura Schlessinger who are bigoted, perverted, and just out to get ratings, off the air because their talk should at the least be controlled so not too much damage can be done. There are some laws that briefly state how sex-related talk is not allowed, so Howard Stern is fined millions of dollars each year, he is allowed to keep going because he knows he will make more money and power off of his ratings. His lewd talk tasteless, and it violates community ethical standards, but the Federal Communications Commission, the governments regulatory body of many communication related fields, including radio, is standing by doing nothing because the community's moral levels are supposedly changing. But people should have the decision who should be broadcasting over the airwaves and who shouldn't since they are they ones who are wanting to listen to something they approve of, and they are the ones that pay the taxes to the government who should be doing what they demand. There are many anti-hate laws to protect people from being emotionally and mentally hurt, but Dr. Laura is allowed to call all homosexuals "deviants" and "biological errors" on the air. The Ku Klux Klan would definitely not be allowed to do such a thing since it hurts other people, and what she and other disc jockeys who are too immature to use their brains instead of bathroom humor is almost as bad, especially since kids could be listening and they are most easily influenced, and they will be the leaders of our society tomorrow. The problem of an infestation of these DJ types isn't bad now because there aren't many in number, but there are thousands, if not millions, more children out their listening and basing their beliefs and attitudes and demeanors on their "idols", and they have a greater chance of turning out like them, too, especially since positive role models are at a premium these days with parents working and being busy too much and the TV, computer, and even radio on too much.

One has to be 18 to buy pornography or view it in any sort, or 18 to view an R rated movie, or to use "adult hotlines," but you don't even have to be a day old to listen to the filth that is just as pornographic, or even dirtier smut. To top it off, most of these shows such as Howard Stern radio show that is syndicated nation wide, or more local DJs such as KSJO's (92.1, 92.3, 92.7 FM San Jose) "Lamont and Tonelli" and "Mikey" in the afternoon, are played during peak hours when children have access to radios- in the morning after they wake up and in the car on the way to school, and in the afternoon after school in the car and before dinner. Traditionally, kids would watch cartoons in the morning before school and after school, but with radio now trying to appeal to a generation that tries to act much older than its age or maturity level- Generation Y- the in your face, titillating, and taboo humor is much more appealing and amusing. There are no ways of stopping younger children from getting to the material they want, and a short warning that is aired at the beginning of every show is rarely heard by listeners at that exact time or not paid any head since the tone blends right in with all the commercials people have learned to phase out. And yes there are those helpful little "bleeps" that can knock out the occasional cuss word, but many of the shock stations tend not to use them to their full capabilities, and producers definitely aren't willing to bleep about whole minutes of air time when a DJ, such as Howard who can be heard all morning on 105.3, KITS, or "live 105", goes on a rant about his or someone else's sexual organs since they would lose listeners and money from advertisers. Since no one is going to voluntarily stop their obscenity, the FCC needs to put harsher penalties on violators and pursue more offenders since there currently are laws about offensive material that violates community standards, but the loose wording is easy to get around, even by FCC chairman Michael Powell (son of Colin Powell). Currently, a station can't get in trouble unless a listener records the broadcast with the offense, notes the offense down, and sends it in to the FCC. Normal complaint calls or letters with no records will not be substantial for the commission, and since not everybody has a tape recorder rolling all the time, people get by. To solve this the FCC could try and monitor some of the offending stations themselves, if not all the time, at least during a short period of time where they could notice for themselves what kind of smut is being put on the air, and violating laws that have been set forth by congress. it is quintessential that laws get set in place sooner than later, because our society is crumbling when we see teenage girls strip down to their thongs on internationally televised TV and have them be known as "role models" and "idols", and the smut that is played on the air, either by the talk show hosts or through the hateful and profanity-full music, such as by the rapper Eminem or the rock group Papa Roach, is being accepted by all into their daily lives, and those names are becoming common in every household.

Drugs and violence are outlawed because they are alleged to deteriorate the condition of society, but free radio is not, and it is having almost a worse effect since it is making kids lose their morals, and some stuff even encourages the latter social diseases, such as in the popular Limp Bizkit song "Break Stuff," which speaks for itself; a different sort of media should be used instead of easily-accessible radio for those types of feelings of anger, rage, and hatred. Just because you have them doesn't mean everybody else needs to!) And when people talk about their "Constitutional Rights" and being allowed to express themselves in anyway they choose, they should remember that the document is loosely worded and over a couple centuries old and highly antiquated, needed a major facelift. (Note that when the Bill of Rights to the US Constitution was written, slavery was legal, too!) Laws are allowed to be changed as the time changes, and people should not have to be restricted by laws that affect their lives in a negative way. The government steps in and regulates many aspects of peoples' lives these days, and radio broadcasting should be no exception, especially since it reaches out so freely to so many adults and easily influenced children. Everyone hopes for a bright future, so we should not let society crumble at the hands of some "potty-mouthed" disc jockeys.
