Does the media have an ethical responsibility to portray men and women equally?

For ages, women have been portrayed as subordinates to men, in television, magazines, and in many other facets of the media. Although they are shown on television 45% of the time (compared to the 55% portrayal of men), they are more often than not shown in the context of a relationship (Media Awareness Network, 4). Men are usually shown in context of their careers.

Although there does not necessarily seem to be anything inherently evil about placing emphasis on different aspects of men and women in these respective areas, over time, constantly seeing these images thrown in the face of the American people can make them become quite convincing.

Do these images provoke these thoughts????

Boy = strong, aggressive, the leader
Girl = weak, passive, the follower
Therefore, Girl < Boy = Girl is inferior to Boy
