Journalism Ethics: General Information
Journalism is something that is done today all over world in civilized countries and considered to be by many something of significant impotance. Others may disagree, but we know many do because journalism has been around for some time andwill continue to do so.
There are different types journalism that we should consider. There is media journalism, which is TV reporting of news and current events that is done by Network Television companies who hire reporters, producers, and anchors whoa are seen on the morning or nightly news.
There is also newspaper journalism that is done by newspaper publications all over the world who print articles daily or weekly with pictures and other written material that both inform and give opinion to the nations.
Last, but not least, there is magazine journalism that is done as well with a lot more in-depth investigation of events, issues, problems, or just feature articles.
Journalists have been around for years in all kinds of shapes and forms through which they have informed generations of people and framed they way we live today.
"The definition of the word 'journalism' is the collection, preparation, and distribution of news and related commentary and feature materials through such media as pamphlets, newsletters, newspapers, magazines, radio, motion pictures, television, and books. The word journalism was originally applied to the reportage of current events in printed form, specifically newspapers, but with the advent of radio and television in the 20th century, the use of the term has broadened to include all printed and electronic communication dealing with current affairs."(Brantinnica.com)
"The earliest known journalistic product was a newssheet circulated in ancient Rome called the Acta Diurna. Published daily in 59 BC, it was hung in prominent places and recorded important social and political events. In China during the T'ang dynasty a court circular called a pao, or "report," was issued to government officials. This gazette appeared in various forms and under various names more or less continually to the end of the Ch'ing dynasty in 1911. The first regularly published newspapers appeared in German cities and in Antwerp around 1609. The first English newspaper, the Weekly News, was published in 1622. One of the first daily newspapers, The Daily Courant, appeared in 1702." (Brantinnica.com)
Since then newspapers and other journalistic productions have evolved and been advanced by technology. We are not only informed of the happenings in our towns and cities we can now learn about what is going on all over the world. It has been a big part of the civilization and will continue to be a big part of the way we live as we look to the future.
But unfortunately almost nothing goes without some debate; some people think that journalism doesn't have a set of ethics to abide by and for that reason has overstepped its boundaries. Others say its duty to report anything that concerns people, which in turn allows it to things that might not always seem the most ethical, but are important because it allows people to find out things they wouldn't be able to know on their own.
