Before we can help other's shouldn't we first focus on fixing our own problems? The US is one of the major contributors to the world's pollution problem, but we are the one nations refusing to do anything about it. Wouldn't our money be better spent dealing with our own problems - third world countries are not the only places that know poverty.
We have a large number of homeless people inhabiting the streets of our cities. More efforts could be out into housing for them or a system to help find ways to employ them, Wouldn't it be better for us if we fixed our homeless problem before we fixed another countries? Not everyone is homeless though, some are just unemployed and soon to be homeless considering that they can't pay for housing or food.
In terms of our environmental problems, shouldn't they be among our top priorities? They not only affect us, but they affect the entire world and all the world's generations to come. Shouldn't we deem the general welfare of the world more important than the welfare of just one of the many countries in the world?
Why are we working to end hunger in other countries while we turn a blind eye to those who are starving in this country? All over the country American's are starving, but we aren't doing anything about it, instead, we are helping the hungry in third would countries. The same goes for medical needs - numerous people in the US can't afford their medical needs and are therefore going untreated, so what do we do, we set up free clinics and send all sorts of aid to other countries with the same problem.
Education in this country has its share of problems, and we should spend our time trying to fix them, because education is a key part of fixing any problem. Were we able to educate, or further the education, of the homeless or unemployed we could lessen their numbers, lessen the number of people in poverty, which would then lessen disease. The way in which our education system is now structured, the rich have all the advantage, they can afford to not go to public school. In the public schools today, the have gotten rid of the tracks, or the different levels of certain subjects, so everyone takes the same level meaning that even the smartest people can only learn at the level of the least advanced. The rich are able to avoid this by attending private schools, but they are then given the advantage when it comes to college. Some time should be spent on why we have a system that favors money, when the important commodity is education.
For the moment, forget about fixing our own problems first, what gives us the right to waltz into other countries announcing that we are going to give them aid and teach them how to run their country to American standards. It's not culture sensitive, we could be destroying major parts of a countries culture.
Finally, when we send money to said other countries, how do we know where it is actually going? Our money seems top have a curious way of disappearing. "More than $20 million deposited by 10 foreign embassies and international aid agencies in a Bosnian bank has disappeared; over $200 million is missing from the Muslim city of Tuzla's budget, in addition to the $300 million reported missing from the previous two years; and the town of Sanski Most used municipal funds to build a horseracing track, while its Mayor, Mehmed Alagic, is accused of stealing $450,000 in aid from Saudi Arabia."( Rett & Chaefer, Why Congress Should ...) Why should we keep sending tax payers' money to the countries if they are using it to build horse tracks.
