On August 6, 1945 the first atomic bomb, "Little Boy" was dropped on Hiroshima. The United States thought that the bombing would force Japan to surrender. However, when Japan failed to surrender, they bombed Nagasaki with a more powerful bomb, "Fat Man" on August 9, 1945. Although there is not an exact count on the casualties endured by the Japanese people from these two bombings, historians estimate that about 140,000 people were killed in Hiroshima and 24,000 were killed in Nagasaki. But was the US justified in dropping these bombs? Was it really necessary to kill that many Japanese civilians, or did the US save more American's lives by dropping the bomb?
