Is Logging
of Ancient Redwod Forests Ethical?
Logging does not seem like a very large
ethical dilemma at first. Why would we worry about cutting down
trees we need to create products? The problem is that the United
States has already cut down about 96% of its original forest cover.(1)
That means the U.S. is running out of trees to cut down for products.
Since most of the forests on the East Coast have been logged already
the logging companies have moved on the West Coast of the United
States. Located on the West Coast are the Redwood Forests, which
contain come of the oldest living trees in the world. Most of
the redwood forests belong to logging companies who bought them
in the late 1800s. The redwood forests are known around the world
for their beauty, age, and size. Is it ethical to cut down these
age-old wonders? It doesnít change the need for wood in
order to make products. At the end of the day they are still trees
and they are still needed for lumber and wood products. This web
page will examine both the idea that it is ethical to log the
redwood forests(Pro) and the idea that it is unethical to log
them(Con).
