Homosexual Marriages is not accepted in the American society, and for many viable reasons. Homosexuality has been around for a long period of time, and one can see that it has not been accepted. Homosexual marriages seems to threaten the institution of marriage, and the belief system of many people.
All one has to do it look at the statistics to see how many people do not rule in favor of the union of two gay people. Only twenty-five percent of black Christians are for he institution of Gay marriages, and only thirteen percent of White Protestants approve of the institution of homosexual marriages. Even thought Vermont is the only state out of the fifty that recognize gay marriages, they refuse to call it marriage. It is now a "civil union." These unions still entitles the couples to the same rights as married people, but just by the terminology that is used one can see that no matter what homosexuality will not ever be fully accepted. People need the euphemisms to calm their nerves, if they didn't this issue would be accepted. The term marriage is used sacredly in this country, so obviously homosexual marriages aren't as sacred as the others.
The Bible can be taken literally or can be depicted to mean something else; however, one statement that comes through clearly is it's stance on homosexuality. "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable." The Christian group as a whole (just about all the sects), the majority is against gay marriages, and feel that it is a crime against nature and God to go and have these kinds of relations. The Pastor of a church in Menlo Park, CA feels that, "...it is disgusting, and not right. God is against it."
Homophobia has placed itself in the middle of our society, and has created giant shock waves among the masses. Charles Krauthammer wrote an article in the Time, and received over 500 reposes stating that those people linked homosexuality with "incest and polygamy." These same people were in an older age group, and were going off traditional values.
Most of the people that are opposed to homosexuality, and homosexual marriage are over fifty-four years old. In the polls, it shows that as age increases the number of people who are in favor of same-sex marriages decreases. People who are thirty -five to fifty-four are forty-six percent opposed, but in the fifty-four and over group they are sixty-nine percent opposed to gay marriages. This trend shows us how "traditional" values have (and still do) play large role in how view other and how accepting we are of "new" ideas.
The idea of homosexuality is still being fought but a major step toward outlawing homosexual marriages in the country was taken when the Knight initiative was passes stating that the only marriage that would be recognized in California would be one between a man and a woman. This puts a halt on gay marriage in California, and even if a couple goes to Vermont (to become a civil union) and moves back , their marriage will still not be recognized. Twenty-nine other states have follow California's example and passed the same law. When marriage is thought of it seems to be a word that can set an example to our children as how things are supposed to be. The question now is what is marriage supposed to be? What purpose will it fulfill and even if it is answered, equality will not be an immediate effect.
