1960's Fashion

"This decade marks the end of the conservatism of fashion, and the rise of the skirt's hemline." In the early 1960°s, the fashionable clothing was pretty and feminine, like tailored suits, hats, and gloves. Also, the extremely thin look was in and women tried to emulate the famous models Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton. Another person who many women modeled themselves after was the first lady: Jackie Kennedy. The °Jackie Kennedy Look° was pillbox hats, bouffant hair, and coats with huge buttons. Most women wore knee-length dresses if they wanted to go anywhere in public. Also in the early sixties, women wore turtleneck sweaters and collarless jackets. Another look of the time was the beatnik, which included black berets, tight black slacks, and float shoes for women and sandals for men. By 63, Mary Quant had designed the mini skirt, but it didn°t become popular until later in the decade.

By the mid-sixties, mini skirts became extremely popular and most skirts were at least six inches above the knee. Along with mini skirts, mini dresses and mini-coats were popular. Another fashionable look of the 60s was using pop-art and op-art on the dresses. Designers used artwork from people like Andy Warhol as designs on their dresses. In 1966, the new trendy dress was the baby doll dress, which had a see- through chiffon over a bright colored slip. Bright colors and abstract patterns were especially popular in the mid 60°s, along with stripes, mod flowers and fringed vests. A-line dresses also went on scene in the mid-60s and became very popular.

The late sixties brought about the paper dress. Although it was sold in many stores, people were afraid that they would catch fire. Also, they could only be worn once or twice and then they would have to be thrown away, so that style quickly went out of fashion. The space age look also came along in the late sixties. The clothes were mostly white, but some had black stripes or accents. In 1969, the hippie-look was extremely popular. People had incredibly long hair; they wore faded jeans, and ethnic looking tops. For the hippies, flower power and peace were all that mattered.

In the beginning of the 60s, men°s suits, influenced by Italian designers, became tighter. Once the Beatles became popular, men°s fashion was modeled after them with single-breasted suits, narrow collared shirts, and thin ties. Men wore their hair in crew cuts. Then as it got to the mid-sixties, men grew their hair longer and sideburns became fashionable. At the end of the decade, men wore polka-dotted ties, bright colored shirts and bell-bottom pants. They also grew out their hair and the hippie-look became popular.

Shoe styles of the decade ranged from strappy sandals to go-go boots. Chunky heels, chisel shaped toes, buckles, lacing, and narrow straps were all popular. Leather shoes of all different colors were popular and boots of any style were very fashionable. Since hemlines of skirts kept getting shorter, boots were worn with everything. The most popular boot of the decade was the Go-Go boot. They were anything from thigh-high to ankle-high boots with a flat heel that were worn with a variety of clothes, like mini skirts or shorts. For men Beatles style boots and °winkle-picker° shoes were extremely trendy.

Hairstyles of the 1960°s started out with the bouffant hairstyle, which was first worn by Jackie Kennedy, but didn°t become really popular until around 1964-65. Also in 1960 and 1961, the beehive hairstyle was very popular. Then in 1962, the French Coiffure, where American ladies copied the styles of French women, became the new style. By 1963, the bob cut, where women wore their hair in a short cut just below the neck, had become popular. In 1964 and 1965, the bouffant reached its peak and was the hairstyle of choice for most women. Then in 1966, the boyish crop, where women°s hair went just a little bit past their ears, was the new favorite cut. In 1967, 68', the short flip was a popular hairstyle. By the end of the decade, in 1969, the unisex look where women and men wore their hair in the same way was extremely fashionable.
