Woodstock 1969

Friday, August 15-Monday, August 18

Woodstock was the biggest music festival of the sixties. It was held at a farm 100 miles outside of Manhattan. Some of the most popular bands from the decade played there, like Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Sly and the Family Stone, and The Who.

Though only about 186,000 tickets were sold, approximately 400,000 showed up. They decided it would be unfair if some paid the eighteen dollars to get in and others got in free, so they declared the concert free. There were so many people, that some bands couldn't even get to the site, and there was a huge traffic problem. They had to send in emergency doctors and food to cater to the large unexpected crowd. Costs were tremendous, the organizers had spent 180,000 dollars on hiring bands to play.

All types of people showed up at the festival. It is estimated the 90 percent of those who were there were doing drugs. There were two deaths, but also two births. Despite the huge crowd, there really was three days of peace and music.
