"Ain't nothing but a hound dog" was performed in front of crowds and crowds of wild teenagers of the 1950's listening to their idol, Elvis Presley. Mesmerized by his knockout looks, enchanting voice, and the ability to swivel his hips, teens fell for this rocka and roll star immediately. Teenagers in the fifties wanted to be different and to break free from the grasps of their parents and Elvis was the perfect person for these kids. He brought a whole new kind of music into the world called rock and roll, which parents thought was unsuitable for their children. Most parents did not approve of the sexual ways in which Elvis Presley moved his body, but teenagers loved him. With his new style he came to be known as Elvis the Pelvis. The 1950's was a fabulous decade where Elvis became famous and was an important part of the spirit of the times.
Elvis Aaron Presley was born in a small house in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. When he moved tot Tennessee, Elvis became more and more interested in music, frequently hearing songs in churches and clubs. He began his career with Sun records and by 1956 he was an international sensation. With over 100 hits including "Hound Dog", "Heartbreak Hotel". and "Jailhouse Rock" Presley sold over one billion records and was nominated for 14 Grammy awards. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army, but this did not hurt his career or his poppularity around the world. Despite his fame and talent, Elvis was a sad and abusive person. He hurt himself the most though. Presley was found dead in a bathroom on August 16, 1977 at age 42 from heart failure, which was most likely connected to drug abuse.
His talent, attractiveness, and charisma made millions love him. He is known as one of the most important figures for pop culture of the 1900's. He represents the new life and excitement of the times. After the war and the depression, the fifties was a time for starting over and Elvis helped to bring entertainment to a dreadful United States. The 1950's are also known for the beginning of rack and roll and Elvis was the one who poppularized this new sound. Teenagers needed an escape from their world and their parents and they could rely on Elvis to bring joy and happiness to their world. Entertainment was a key aspect of the decade and Elvis accompanied all the great television shows and movie stars perfectly. Presley symbolizes this teen oriented and starting over period. The King never goes unmentioned when talking about the fifties.
In conclusion, Elvis Presley had a very illustrious career and represents the spirit of this decade. Teenagers and the world loved his personality and he had a knack for entertaining in front of large crowds. He will go down as one of the most famous music stars in the history of our country.
