TOP TEN POWERPOINT TIPS

10. Create an outline or graphic organizer for each slide you present.  Then copy only your primary arguments into your PowerPoint storyboard.  The examples, evidence, and explanations supporting your arguments should be included in your notes for the PowerPoint, but should only be presented orally.  This will keep the info on your PowerPoint concise and easy for your audience to follow.  Click here for a storyboard template.

9. Be concise, yet clear with your PowerPoint text. For example:  Rather than, “The watershed of San Francisco Bay is so large that it encompasses 60,000 square miles, or about 40% of California.”  Try, “SF Bay's watershed is about 60,000 square miles, nearly 40% of California!”

8. Write your presentation in a word document or as PowerPoint notes.

7. Complete the content and format of each slide (including any images) before selecting the background, text color, or font size and style.

6. Select background and text colors that contrast.  This will make it much easier for your audience to read your text and view your images.

5. Avoid using too many background or text colors.

4. Consider the resolution of any image you wish to import into your PowerPoint. Generally speaking the smaller the image the lower the resolution.  When you import a small image (say a “thumbnail”) and then try to make it larger it will become distorted.  This will also impact how your image looks when your PowerPoint is projected onto a larger screen.

3. Use animation to your advantage, but avoid using too much animation as this slows down your PowerPoint, may create confusion during your presentation, or distract your audience.  You may want to decide on a standard animation and apply it to each slide. This creates a pattern your audience will recognize.

2. Please do not place any sound effects into your presentation.
