Chapter 12: DiHybrid Crosses

Sometimes you might want to study more than one trait. Mendel looked at several traits in peas including seed color and seed shape.

The Yellow (Y) allele is dominate to green (y) allele

The round (R) allele is dominate to wrinkled (r) allele.

What will you produce if you breed a plant with yellow-round seeds (PPQQ) and a plant with green-wrinkled seeds (ppqq)?

The results depend upon if the alleles for color are independent of the alleles for shape. (if the allele loci are on different chromosomes)

Mendel carried out this experiment and his results for the F2 generation were:

315 smooth yellow seeds
101 wrinkled yellow seeds
108 smooth green seeds
32 wrinkled green seeds

This is about 9:3:3:1
