Chapter 6: Cytoskeleton

The cytockeleton provides shape, support and movement to cells. It attaches the organelles into its network made out of protein fibers. There are several types of fibers, thin micro-filaments, intermediate filaments, and thick microtubules. They provides 4 important functions:

  1. Cell shape is determined by these filaments if the cell has no cell wall.
  2. Cell movement is caused by the assembly, disassembly and sliding of these mico-filaments
  3. Organelle movement is caused by the microtubules and microfilaments
  4. In Cell division the microtubules pull the chromosomes into the daughter nuclei. In animal cell division a ring of microfilaments pinch off the parent cell around the middle to separate the cytoplasm into tow parts.
