Waxes, Fats and Oils (page 2)

Many of these seeds and nuts are easily found on Arda so it should not be a problem obtaining sufficient quantities of seeds and oils. After they are pressed they are heated and cooked to break the coagulated proteins, which will release the oils. These oils are useful cooking and especially flavoring. After they are heated it is necessary to separate the oils from the excess seed waste. This is possible by using a powerfully press that will create the hydrophobic oil which can be then collected and in many different ways.

The other important product is wax. This can be harvested and refined from the fats that are gathered from animals. They are very similar to natural fats with the Ester form, except rather than glycerol for the alcohol group the waxes have mono hydroxyl groups(Figure 5). Although they fats and waxes are both solids the wax, due to its monohydroxyl group is malleable. This malleability in addition to its hydrophobic properties make this ester and excellent source for making things water proof as well as construction wax items such as candles. A common chemical construction of these waxes, thus showing a common monohydroxyl.(Figure 6)Waxes are very useful in because of their maluable properities and their solid state at room temperature. These waxes, fats and oils change properties according to their chain length.

As the acid side or alcohol has more or less fatty acid chains of carbons the characteristics of the waxes, fats and oils vary. As oils are fats that are found in a liquid state at room temperature they have different properties as well.

As this new colony is looking far into the future they will need to gain the technology to use waxes, fats and acids. With very little energy the earliest survivors can use the local recourses and some combustion energy to create very useful products. Many important products include, the ability to water proof to save from rotting, wax and oil candles and flavoring in cooking among others. A simple process that can create huge chemical compounds will great benefit the new settlers of Arda.
