What
are the advantages of Vulcanized Rubber? Vulcanized
rubber has increased strength and elasticity and greater resistance to
changes in temperature than crude rubber. It is impermeable to gases,
and resistant to abrasion, chemicals, heat, and electricity. Vulcanized
rubber also exhibits high frictional resistance on dry surfaces and low
frictional resistance on water-wet surfaces. Why
would Vulcanized Rubber be important in transportation? Vulcanized Rubber is a wonderful thing in the world of transportation. It has a wide variety of practical uses while also relatively easy to obtain. Uses of vulcanized rubber range from tires for a car, bike, scooter, tractor, wheelbarrow etc (see Figure 4). Having such tires would be vital on Arda, where paved roads would not be present. Vulcanized rubber could also be used in the hulls of boats or rafts. |

Figure 4 | |
| While vulcanized rubber would help vehicle transportation, its greatest use may be in the most basic form of transportation: walking. With its flexibility and durability, vulcanized rubber is the perfect material for making shoe soles (Figure 5). Vulcanized Rubber's advantageous characteristics would allow people on Arda to walk over rocks easily. Vulcanized Rubber soles would also be much more comfortable than walking around barefoot. | ![]() |
