How
would we vulcanize the rubber? Step 1: Obtain a strong heat source. Since Vulcanization requires temperatures of around 200*C, this is necessary. Some possible sources could be: 1. A wood or coal burning fire 2. Hot Steam 3.
Burning of Fossil Fuels (possibly obtained by another group) Step
2: Obtain some sort of pot or bowl made of heat conductive materials.
This would be necessary to mix the ingredients. Step
3: Obtain crude rubber (as described above) and add it to the reaction Step
4: Obtain sulfur (as described above). To determine how much sulfur to
add, it must be decided what type of rubber is needed. If we wanted hard
rubber (eg. for a boat hull), we would add 30% sulfur. If we wanted softer,
more flexible rubber (eg. shoe soles) we would add 5% sulfur. Step 5: Allow the ingredients to react for 5 hours. |
