- Oxidation: an increase in oxidation state (a
loss of electrons)
- Oxidizing
agent: electron acceptor,
a reactant that accepts electrons from another reactant.
- Galvanic
cell: consists of at
least two half cells, a reduction cell and an oxidation cell. Chemical
reactions in the two half-cells provide the energy for the galvanic
cell operations. (see fig. 1)
- Battery: a group of galvanic cells connected
in series.
- Lead-
Acid batteries: the anode
is lead, the cathode is lead coated with lead dioxide, and the electrolyte
is a sulfuric acid solution.
- Wet-cell
batteries:
- Electrolyte: a material that dissolves in water
to give a solution that conducts an electric current.
- Metallurgy: the process of separating a metal
from its ore and preparing it for use.

Behind the Battery
Note
that the anode is the electrode at which oxidation occurs, while the
cathode is the electrode at which reduction occurs.
