Day 7: Luz-St. Saveur to Beaudean - Col du Tourmalet

Tourmalet profile -west side

Today was the day we'd all been waiting for - the big climb up the Col du Tourmalet. Our hotel proprietor wished us "Bon Courage" as we departed on the 12-mile climb. Fortunately the weather was excellent, clear and not overly hot. Lots of huffing and puffing, but we all made it, with a glorious view at the summit and a screaming descent down the other side. Tom and Jon attempted a little cyclocross to bag Pic du Midi, off the summit of the Tourmalet, but were foiled in their attempt by a mid-afternoon thunderstorm. Discretion is the better part of valor....

Harlan's photo project for the trip was to take a picture of every km sign up the climb. I thought his efforts should be recorded for posterity.

Click on photo for another movie. Rich lost Linda off the back of the tandem and rode the beast up all by himself. Amazing!

Penultimate sign! Average grade 10%...

Voila! The summit!

We all made it!

Total for the day: 28 miles, 4800 feet.
