Welcome Welcome to 7th Grade Science! We have kicked off the year with a study of the ‘Tools of a Scientist.’ From the Metric System to the Scientific Method, we have been examining theoretical and actual tools scientists use to explore the world, analyze data, and articulate their findings. This unit culminates with a study of graphs and visual representations of data. We examine graphs and discuss their purpose, clarity, and presentation. The sevies spend time in the computer lab learning how to use Microsoft Excel and how to create various graphs using a spreadsheet. After collecting different types of data, the scientists create the ideal graph and verbally justify every aspect of the graph. Finally, we began a discussion that will continue throughout the entire year. What is the stereotype of a scientist? What do I want that stereotype to be? From drawing our own pictures of scientists to scanning the media to a careful examination of textbooks, we will be looking for and discussing generalizations. Check back for an update when we dive into marine science . . . |
